David's Notes: This is one of my favorite general purpose guitars in the PRS catalog. It can do it all. The design started from the idea of creating a coil splitting pickup that didn't have a volume delta when switching between singlecoil and humbucking modes. To accomplish this they crafted the pickups in such a fashion that when you split them, the screw coils are disconnected and the slug coils gain an additional 1500 turns of wire. It works wonderfully! The 408N (narrow field) pickups are a little brighter than full width humbuckers yet maintain a well rounded, thick, and articulate sound.

The 25" scale length combined with the switchable pickups allows this guitar to convincingly reach into both the Les Paul and Stratocaster tonal territories. With the dual micro-switch controls, any combination of pickup settings is possible. Those micro-switches are perfectly placed for articulation by the ring finger of the right hand. This is a great guitar for a player who likes to cross over into several different genres of music.

What really grabbed me about this particular Paul's Guitar, and why I eventually added it to my collection, was the amazing color and grain of the neck. I've seen my share of Rosewood fretboards before, but this Hondouran Rosewood is incredibly beautiful. Also, the top on this instrument is a bargain. It's the closest to a 10-top I've ever seen without actually being considered one, or priced as one. The Azul color seems a bit dark under normal indoor lighting, but get this instrument under stage lighting or out in the sun and the gorgeous detail in the flamed maple just jumps out at you. This guitar spends a good deal of time hanging on display in my home office.

Designed and played by Paul Reed Smith for players and guitar aficionados the world over. “These guitars have a beautiful new look and a highly musical tone that I love,” Paul Reed Smith.

Carrying on the Modern Eagle tradition, Paul’s Guitar is essentially a production version of his Private Stock guitar. Paul specified every appointment of this instrument from the wood selection and inlay design to the pickups. Paul’s Guitar is now offered with the option of PRS’s patented tremolo bridge or a stoptail bridge with brass inserts. “The stoptail bridge is still our aluminum bridge but at the point at which the string starts vibrating it’s brass to promote the musical high range of the guitar,” said Paul. With exclusive “brushstroke” bird inlays and two narrow 408 pickups, this guitar is not only unique...it’s the guitar that Paul Reed Smith has been playing in his studio and on the stage.
